Perth-based progressive rock/metal trio Platypus are making waves with their explosive second single Terraforming, premiered on Heritage FM’s The Circle Pit. Produced and featuring bass from Jon Stockman (Karnivool), the track cements the band’s place as one of Australia’s most exciting new forces in heavy music.

Driven by the urgent theme of climate change, Terraforming incorporates excerpts from Dr. Carl Sagan’s 1985 address to the U.S. Congress — words that still ring painfully true decades later. Over a chaotic, cinematic instrumental, Sagan’s voice warns of the consequences of ignoring fossil fuel dependency, amplifying the track’s emotional weight and frustration at decades of inaction.

Musically, Platypus deliver a sonic storm: precision riffs, soaring atmospherics, seismic bass, and shifting polyrhythms that recall the intensity of Tool and the cinematic scope of Porcupine Tree. Environmental soundscapes — cracking icebergs, seismic rumbles — reinforce the message, transforming Terraforming into more than just a song. It’s a call to awareness.

The band’s previous single Black Holes took a more introspective dive into fear, hopelessness, and the need for human connection. In contrast, Terraforming is outward-looking and confrontational — a bold statement that music can (and should) be used to spotlight critical issues facing the planet.

Influenced by prog heavyweights like Karnivool, Porcupine Tree and Cog, Platypus balance technicality and emotion in equal measure. Their immersive soundscapes weave between heavy riffs, acoustic passages, and abstract lyricism, making their live shows a powerful experience.

2025 has been a breakout year: two singles with Stockman at the helm, national radio attention, and growing recognition in Australia’s progressive rock and metal community. With their debut EP set for vinyl release in late September — and a second EP already scheduled for later this year — Platypus are just getting started.

Terraforming isn’t just a track. It’s a warning shot, wrapped in a wall of sound that demands to be heard.
